General Information

REGISTRATION:

A fee is payable on registration and this covers entry to both the Junior and the Senior Schools; no additional fee is required when your child transfers from the Junior into the Senior School. If you wish to register your child at Hurworth House please contact the School and ask for a Registration Form and return it to the Headmaster's Secretary.

ENTRY:

There are no formal entry tests for entry into the School. However, we invite all children to spend a full day or a half day with us in order for us to assess their numeracy and reading levels and for them to meet their future classmates and teachers.

FEES:

All are payable in advance. Details of our current fees structure are available from the Headmaster's Secretary. Fees are inclusive of tuition, textbooks, exercise books, meals, etc. The School is a member of the Holmwoods Fees Planning Scheme which helps to stagger the cost of fees throughout the year (details available on request). A school fees insurance scheme is also available to cover absence through illness since fees cannot be refunded. The Bursar is always happy to advise on either of these two schemes. The Governing Board of Hurworth House School is very aware of the costs of educating a child in an independent school and, whilst reviewing fee levels annually, attempts to keep fee increases in line with the current economic situation.

SCHOLARSHIPS:

There are three academic scholarships available in each of the following age groups: 9+, 11+ and 13+. Two of these scholarships in each group are set aside for external candidates and one for internal candidates. All scholarships are awarded on the results of formal examinations in Mathematics, English and a General Paper and by interview with the Headmaster. Successful candidates will demonstrate all round academic ability and will be deemed to be able to make a positive contribution to the life of the School. Examinations and interviews are held in February for entry into the School the following September. Parents wishing to enter their child should contact the school for a Scholarship Entry Form which should be returned to the School not later than 31 January in the year of entry.

UNIFORM:

All pupils are required to wear school uniform. A copy of the current uniform list is available by clicking the Uniform List link on the Menu Bar. All uniform items are available at the School Uniform Shop on site. Details of opening times can be obtained from the Headmaster's Secretary.

TRAVEL:

The School runs four bus services from various areas to school. A small fee per term is levied for the cost of these services. Places are extremely limited. For details of routes, pick-up points and times, please contact the Headmaster's Secretary.

PARENTS:

Hurworth House encourages regular contact with parents at all levels. Education at Hurworth House is a continuing partnership between pupils, parents and teachers. Detailed academic reports on pupils' progress are sent to parents twice a year at the end of term and a mini-report at every half term. Regular parents meetings are held in school. A weekly newsletter, The Link, keeps parents and friends in touch with the news, developments and forthcoming events at the School. Our Parents' Association organises a busy calendar of social and fund-raising events for the School including quiz nights and our annual Summer Ball. Its committee meets regularly with the Headmaster and other staff. All new parents are welcome to join.

SPECIAL NEEDS & DYSLEXIA:

Hurworth House has provision to offer extra support to children with dyslexia. An experienced and qualified teacher is available to assist such children on a one-to-one basis. We also have a fully trained member of staff who is available to assist children individually, whenever the need arises, with their reading and numeracy skills.

THE SCHOOL DAY:

In the Early Years of the Junior School (Reception J2) the day finishes at 3.30 p.m. In the remainder of the Junior School and in the Senior School academic lessons finish at 4.15 p.m. However, we offer a supervised homework session and (for students in the Senior School) a range of after-school activities until 5pm. We are also able to supervise Early Years children until 5 p.m.
