MUSIC AND DRAMA are central to the life of Hurworth House School.

All pupils are encouraged to learn a musical instrument and the School has a number of  visiting professional peripatetic teachers. Children are taught individually or as a group in these lessons.

There is a range of musical activities at the School, including orchestra, choirs and instrumental ensembles. Pupils participate in these activities from an early age, learning an instrument to build up ensemble playing skills.

All pupils are taught music based on the National Curriculum up to and including Form 5. They learn basic composition, performance and notation. GCSE Music is offered to all students who wish to take the subject further.

DRAMA is a special interest of several members of staff at Hurworth House, and everyone is aware of its benefits in promoting self-esteem, self-discipline and self-confidence.

As well as teaching Drama and Theatre Arts as a GCSE subject and offering individual Speech and Drama lessons, the  Drama department works in conjunction with the Music department to mount at least two major productions a year (one in the Junior School and a joint production in the Summer Term). These draw on expertise from inside and outside the School, thus forging an important link between parents, pupils, teachers and the local community. Recent highly successful productions include Macbeth, Bugsy Malone and Oliver!

The Drama Department also organises visits to professional performances and theatre workshops.
